Andrew James Wellington, 34, faced charges of common assault, intimidation and damaging property.

Court papers said Wellington used a public phone outside the East Nowra Shopping Centre in Kalandar Street around 10.15pm on May 24 to ring triple zero saying he required an ambulance and he “was going to kill someone”.

When the male paramedic arrived and attempted to talk to Wellington he was met with a tirade of abuse.

Court papers said the paramedic could not communicate with Wellington because of his aggressive behaviour.

Wellington then launched himself at the paramedic with his arms raised yelling, “You’re a dog”.

In fear of being assaulted the paramedic backed away towards the driver’s side of the vehicle and called police for assistance.

As the paramedic drove away towards safety, Wellington punched the passenger door leaving an indentation.

The paramedic waited a short distance away until police arrived.

Police also tried to talk to Wellington who again became aggressive and agitated, continuing his profanity riddled abuse, repeating he was “going to kill someone”.

The paramedic returned to the scene and spoke to police, who then arrested Wellington.

Wellington pleaded guilty to the charges in Nowra Local Court, with Magistrate Gabriel Fleming sentencing him to 12 months’ jail from May 25 this year, with a non-parole period of three months.

He will be eligible for release on August 24.
