As the son of Australia's renowned artist Charles Blackman and writer Barbara Blackman, Auguste was born into a highly creative family.
These current paintings were inspired by Charles Blackman's famed signature series Alice in Wonderland, dating from the 1950s and also the recent 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's famous book.
I worked in the food industry – the whole thing of plates, cups and saucers, this kind of thing has a lot of life to it.
- Auguste Blackman
Not only is Auguste a talented artist, excelling in bold colour where each painting tells a story, he is also a writer of those stories and a raconteur.
His poetry has been read at numerous public events, including the opening of his father's recent exhibition at the State Gallery of Queensland and the launch of his mother's latest book at UQ Art Museum.
Auguste will be reciting a piece written for this show at the opening.
"I worked in the food industry – the whole thing of plates, cups and saucers, this kind of thing has a lot of life to it,” he said.
"It was my father's great paintings from the '50s – I've not really wanted to copy his idea, but it's very strong.
"I love to paint in Alice's Wonderland.”
Blackman exhibits extensively throughout Australia and this exhibition is an excellent and rare opportunity to see an exhibition of recent works by him in a local gallery.
Details: Minnamurra Cafe, 1A Rangoon Rd, opening night August 13, 5-7pm. Exhibition continues to September 10, 8am – 4pm, seven days a week.
