Artist Guido Van Helten’s mural which depicts an historical photo taken by the late Jeff Carter in 1955 of a fisherman mending a fishing net at Greenwell Point was one of the areas tagged by vandals.
The artwork has proudly featured on the rear wall of the former Betta Electrical building in the Nowra CBD, looking over the Egans Lane car park since 2014.
That all changed on Monday morning when graffiti was found not only on the fisherman mural but also on the front of the Betta Electrical building and in numerous spots in the THOROUGH_FAIR, between Berry Street and the car park, which also boasts a number of art works.
Shoalhaven City Council’s graffiti removal team has been facing an almost daily battle against the unwanted tagging, especially around the Shoalhaven City Council administration building in Bridge Road.
The Register understands it has nearly been a daily occurrence at the Bridge Road site.
The vandalism has been reported to Shoalhaven Police, with council rangers also investigating.
Anyone with any information can contact Nowra police on 4421 98699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Did you know offenders caught can be fined and jailed?
As of 2012 youths arrested for graffiti aren’t eligible for a caution or youth conference and go before the court.
Under the Graffiti Control Act 2008, offenders can be fined up to $1100 or sentenced to 12 months in jail.
They can also be ordered to take part in the clean-up program.
There is also an allowance for the court to put an extension on any provisional driver’s licence they may have.
It is also an offence to have an implement in their possession such as a texta or spray can. That offence also carries a fine and up to six months in jail.
