Councillor Mark Way would like to see a boardwalk constructed at Werri Lagoon, to enable walkers to access the beach when the estuary is open to the ocean.
“Werri Lagoon is a bit of a problem for our walking track from Kiama Heights to Werri and simply, people get on the track when the lagoon is open they can’t get through,” he said.
“If they’re from out of town they call the police and all sorts of things.”
Mr Way said the Kiama coast walk was an asset to the community.

“It’s a long walk, once you get to this location turning around and going back is a bit of a nightmare for the average person because they’ve already walked a long way,” he said.
“A simple solution here is to have a boardwalk that is low profile, low visual impact – the location here from where the track finishes is only about 50 metres, so it’s going to be cost effective and I think it would be easy to get grant funding for it.”
As chairman of Kiama Walking Tracks and Cycleways Committee, the vision is to have an arterial infrastructure link right through the municipality.

Mr Way said the location of the proposed boardwalk would not impact on the beach or nearby homes.
“Council at the present time are creating a concept plan and then it will go to community consultation,” he said.
“We will also be able to get a costing on the project and move on from there.
“As chairman of Kiama Walking Tracks and Cycleways Committee, the vision is to have an arterial infrastructure link right through the municipality,” he said.
“It’s a missing link in the southern walking track and it’s becoming increasingly popular, lots of people are on it.”
