Digger Day is the Shoalhaven’s leading fundraising event to support DefenceCare which helps Australian veterans.
This year, the Shoalhaven played host to two Victoria Cross recipients, Warrant Officer Keith Payne AM and New Zealand special forces Lance Corporal Willie Apiata.
After the Red Berets parachute team landed and Squadron 723 flew in the visiting Victoria Cross recipients, Kiama 1st grade took on a very determined Shoalhaven side.
Kiama put first points on the board with a great try from Ben Tacon, who though was carrying a shoulder that needed fixing, played through the pain.
Unfortunately, Shoalhaven with a couple of speedy backs, put on a half time score of 36-7.
From the kick off, Kiama slowly applied the pressure and with the forwards building momentum the score line decreased.
Bob Dallaglio continued to add to his impressive try tally for the 2017 season.
Jack Smith again played well at hooker and was rewarded with a try at the end of the game.
Dale Albatross shone in the backs, but not as much as his eye after a very unfriendly head clash. Not to be outdone, Kiama captain Andrew Saulter crashed over late in the game for a final score of 36-24 to the Shoalies.
Kiama 2nd grade had a solid day, but eventually went down 29-26 in a game that was there to be had. Jake Lee played out of his skin to get the three points.
Reilly Upcroft finally put his game together, scoring a great try getting two points best and fairest and players player. Veteran Chris Meizer had his usual solid game receiving one point best and fairest.
A highlight for the 2nd grade players was when visiting New Zealand VC Lance Corporal Willie Apiata, who knew his way around the field, took to the field in 2nd grade for Kiama.
Kiama Rugby has its last home game this weekend against the Camden Rams.
Special guest and former player Peter Asquith will be attendance to celebrate his 40th birthday and the mouse races will commence at 6.30pm. It will be a huge day.
