The Love Your Sister project was started by actor Samuel Johnson in 2012 after his sister, Connie Johnson, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The pair raised more than $4.5 million for cancer research, but now Connie is preparing to say goodbye after deciding to stop treatment earlier this year.
Sydney-based artist and photographer Marie Ramos in creating her own project to honour Connie and raise funds in the fight against cancer. ‘A Heart As Big As Yours’ will see 2000 ceramic tiles, each containing two fingerprints to form a heart, on permanent display at the Garvan Institute in Sydney.
While Connie's tile takes centre stage, the rest of the piece will be filled by prints from everyday Australians.
Nowra resident ShonaRobyn Eisenberg has organised for Marie Ramos to bring her project to town this Friday, July 14.
A ‘heart station’ will be based at City Church Nowra, 167 Mcmahon Road, North Nowra from 10am to 2pm. Everyone is invited. Each heart costs $50, with the aim of raising $100,000 in total. Donors will later be given a map showing where their heart is in the finished artwork.
You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t been affected by cancer, and Ms Eisenberg is no different.
“I’m a registered nurse in aged care and palliative care so I’ve seen many families go through it,” she said.
“Cancer has affected my own family on all sides and my daughter’s Godmother was diagnosed late last year. If you hate cancer, this is an opportunity to get on board.”
Ms Eisenberg is hoping for strong support on Friday.
“I’d love to fill a square which is 81 tiles,” she said.
“People care in the Shoalhaven. We see it with so many events such as Relay for Life. I see that caring attitude with my daughter’s friends. I will hand the world over to the next generation because they care.”
More than 1500 hearts are still needed before the planned unveiling of the artwork in October, in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
