Three levels of government were on hand to turn the first sod on the Fowlers Road overpass – 1.3 kilometre stretch of road with two bridges that will link Fowlers Road and Fairwater Drive.
The NSW government put in $23 million and $10 million in funding came from the federal government.
Wollongong City Council will foot the remainder of the bill, which is expected to be between $90 and $95 million.
That is a substantial bill, given the council budget for capital works across the city this financial year is $91 million.
“This is going to be one of the biggest capital works programs this council has undertaken,” said Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery.
“It will mean that we increase the flood reliability for this particular part of West Dapto.
“It will also give people free and easy access through to West Dapto and the land release out here. So it’s a vital piece of infrastructure for the expansion of this particular area of Wollongong.”
The road link is expected to be open by 2020.
“Today is about building for the future, is about jobs for our region and about delivering on improved access to housing right across our region,” said Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward.
