In a breakthrough for these communities, the state government pledged full funding for the Minnamurra cycleway and walkway in the budget.
For four years, Kiama councillor Mark Way lobbied Kiama MP Gareth Ward to secure millions of dollars for the project.
The cycleway and walkway will provide a kick for the local tourism industry and safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists according to Cr Way.
“The project will be of huge benefit to local people but will also attract attention from visitors outside the region," he said.
“The tourism potential is absolutely huge.
“I suspect it will become our version of the Sea Cliff Bridge.”
He said the stretch of road has been an accident waiting to happen.
“It has been a problem for many years now,” he said.
“There’s only really enough room for cars.
“Cyclists can’t see around the bends, and if there’s a cyclist, cars just stack up.
“Unfortunately children still want to go from a to b, and they don’t want to go the long way, we all know that, so they jump the fence and risk it.”
Mr Ward said strong community support for the project was the key to unlocking funds.
“As your local MP, I love nothing more than fighting for projects that make a real difference in people’s lives and improve our community,” he said.
“Every letter, email and signature on a petition helped me make the strongest case to the treasurer and NSW government to secure these funds.”
Kiama Council has been working on a concept plan.
Once it’s complete, council will unveil the plan, and accept feedback from the community.
Cr Way would like to see picnic benches and other facilities nearby that complement the walkway incorporated into the plan.
Mr Ward has encouraged residents to continue lodging feedback on the project, particularly when it’s open to community consultation.
