Allan William Joseph Browne, 36, of Wallace Street, appeared before Nowra Court registrar Craig Cockburn on Monday charged with stealing from a person and larceny.
Police allege just after 1pm (June 2), a 77-year-old woman was in a supermarket car park in East Street when she fell while attempting to stop her trolley from rolling away.
At the time the woman’s handbag was strung over the rear of the trolley.
A number of people assisted the woman and during this time it was noticed her handbag was missing from the trolley.
Shoalhaven police put out a public appeal for information and arrested Browne a couple of days later.
Court documents said the handbag contained $40 in cash, three credit cards and a $300 Myer gift card.
Browne will reappear on July 10.
