Kiama Library is hosting a series of help sessions to support Illawarra HSC students throughout the year.

They are also holding their annual ‘Lock in’ session from 4pm to 8pm on Wednesday, October 11 in the final week before the HSC exams.
Students get free pizza and the entire library to themselves.
“As we all know, the HSC is a really big event for students, so this program helps to support them,” manager of library services Michelle Hudson said.
“We also get money from the Friends of Kiama Library to pay for the tutors, and what we’re doing is just giving them that extra level of information that they may need to do their HSC.”
The feedback from students has been very positive and Mrs Hudson said there was room in the program to take more students.
“We’ve done it for a number of years and all the students who come really appreciate it and get a lot out of it, particularly the creative writing courses have found that it is something they don’t cover in the same way at school,” she said.
“It’s at a good time when they’re starting to think about their trial exams and getting prepared, a lot of students who come along feel it really motivates them to continue with their study.”
Author Clayton Zane and Dapto High School deputy principal Daniel Inness each held presentations to students in June.
“We get teachers from other areas who come down and sometimes that just gives students a different perspective,” Mrs Hudson said.
Kiama High School year 12 student Claudia St John has used the library to support her through the HSC and has been a member since 2003.
“It enables me to source a variety of subject material, music, books and magazines, easily that I cannot otherwise find on the internet,” she said.
“Over the years, the library also provides a quite place to go to study or do homework after school or before going to work.
“I often borrow books for leisure as a timeout from my day to day studies and the good thing is I often find the variety of books are current.”
Miss St John said coping with the stress of studying for the HSC was all about balance.
“I try my hardest to stay on top of my workload by studying regularly and setting small goals but I also need some time out,” she said.
“Working a part time job and going out with friends occasionally has helped in coping with the stress of Year12 and doing the HSC.”
