Sound engineer Matt Damon, 24, credits the Soundgarden frontman as being a big influence on his life and felt compelled to do something in the aftermath to raise awareness on mental health.
Damon is looking for musicians to record a cover of one of Cornell’s hits as a tribute while also raising money for beyondblue. The song will be recorded at Adam Jordan’s Main Street Studios in Fairy Meadow for free.
“We’ve all gone through our hard times … and music plays a really big role in that for me in terms of getting through those hard times,” he said.
“I have known people who have been unfortunately stricken by depression to the point of suicide, it does hit home on a lot levels.”
Damon’s love for the Seattle musician began around age 10 when his dad introduced him to Soundgarden, the music becoming “a big part” of his life.
Musicians from any genre have until June 16 to apply to be part of the mega-group, whether they’re a hip-hop rapper or a heavy metal guitarist.
Damon hopes to create an eclectic group for the recording and also anticipates broadcasting live video of the recording process on the web.
“Music’s always been a big part of my life and it’s always brought things together for myself; and especially in this event I was quite surprised … with the really great response already,” he said.
On May 18 Cornell was found dead in a Detroit hotel room not long after performing at a Soundgarden concert the night before. He was known to have suffered from depression and substance abuse in the past.
