The rebuilding of Greenwell Point Road at Brundee, east of Nowra, and Culburra Road towards Culburra Beach have both suffered.
Close to half a kilometre of Greenwell Point Road, west of Mayfield Road, is being rebuilt and raised through a $1 million project jointly funded by council and the RMS.
Both lanes of the road surface have been removed and rebuilt, with council’s director of Assets and Works Ben Stewart saying the project had been on track to be completed and sealed next week.
The wet weather earlier this week saw the southern side of the road, which motorists are currently diverted onto, reduced to a pot holed mess.
As weather cleared on Thursday, contractors were able to take the majority of the rough edges off the potholes and smooth some of the road out.
Mr Stewart said due to the rain, motorists would see potholes impacting the road.
“Without the wet weather the road was in scheduled to be sealed next week,” he said.
“This weather is likely to extend works up to three weeks due to poor ground conditions.
“In this case, because we are raising the road by up to 200mm we had to open up both sides of the road at the same time to ensure the work was done at a similar time to support roads rather than have drop-offs.
“There is not a significant amount of room through that area to even be able to divert vehicles onto other areas.”
He thanked motorists and residents for their patience during the rebuilding process. There are likely to be significant delays during peak times.
“We hope Greenwell Point Road will be sealed by the end of June, weather permitting,” he said.
“Following the rain we need five days of dry weather ahead of sealing. We really are at the mercy of the weather. A dry period would help significantly.”
Another section of Greenwell Point Road, east of Mayfield Road, will be reconstructed once the current work is complete.
Council is also undertaking construction work on Culburra Road, Coolangatta Road, Albatross Road and the Old Princes Highway at Termeil.
Mr Stewart said staff would be monitoring the gravel road surfaces over the long weekend.
A low pressure system off the NSW coast produced rain throughout the Shoalhaven earlier in the week, with Vincentia the wettest place in the city on Wednesday and Thursday recording 129 millimetres of rain.
Up until 9am Wednesday Vincentia recorded 61mm, followed by another 68mm up to 9am Thursday.
Nowra recorded almost 70 millimetres, 28.2mm up to 9am Wednesday and 41mm to 9am Thursday. Wednesday was Nowra’s wettest day since March 4 (71.8mm).
Up to a further 10mm of rain is expected on Friday with showers to continue right through the long weekend with falls of up to 5mm predicted each day.
Just eight days into June Nowra has recorded 69.44mm, well down on its long term average of 124.5mm.
Nowra is still well down on its wettest June on record which was in 2016 when 411.8mm was recorded.
Ulladulla recorded 61mm on Wednesday and Thursday.
