The 51-year-old man spent 45 minutes in the water before a three-man crew aboard the Kiama Surf Rescue jet boat found him about 100 metres off-shore.
“In the chop we saw a flicker of light off in the distance,” boat captain Rhys Dawson said. “We headed in that direction and we located him floating face up in the water.”
“Thankfully he was doing the right thing – he was wearing a life jacket and at the time he had a torch on him.
“I think he was very lucky that we got to him when we did.”
The man suffered hypothermia and a head injury. He was airlifted to St George in a critical but stable condition. By Monday his condition was listed as stable.
