The group will hold a regular stall to address the threat climate change poses to the health, wellbeing and security of people around the globe, with a particular focus on Australia’s poorest and most vulnerable neighbours.
“We share concerns about the Great Barrier Reef and the South Pacific Islands who are threatened by rising sea levels,” petitioner Denis Quinn said.
“We see climate change as being one of the great contemporary concerns of our nation.”
The Community Climate Petition is being rolled out across the country at an electorate level, where it will then be submitted to each local Federal member.
“After the winter recess, MP Ann Sudmalis will be required to present the petition in parliament, so our hope is to have 150 Members of Parliament presenting this petition as a voice of our concern in relation to climate change,” Mr Quinn said.
“Simply, we would like people to come along if they are concerned and sign the petition, so we have a strong petition to take to our federal member.
“Our belief is that our government action is definitely nowhere near strong enough.”
Mr Quinn said as carbon emissions continue to increase, the current policies in place go nowhere near achieving the reduction that is necessary in the intermediate and long-term future.
“The petition requests respectfully that government reduce it’s emission and set a target of zero emissions well before the year 2050, that it takes special consideration of farming communities that may be especially impacted by the transition to renewable energy, and finally it has concern for our Pacific and other neighbours who are especially impacted by climate change,” he said.
