More than 500 Latin and ballroom dancers will compete across June 24 and 25 at the WIN Entertainment Centre.
It’s expected to generate around $250,000 in economic activity for the city according to Destination Wollongong major events manager Jeremy Wilshire.
“While this is not a huge event in regards to participation numbers, DanceSport is a welcome addition to the portfolio,” Mr Wilshire said.
“It introduces a new demographic to the region, utilises one of the city's major assets, builds on the arts-based offerings that the city is now hosting, and is held during one of the quieter months in regard to major event activity, which is good news for accommodation, food and beverage and retail outlets.
“WEC is seen as an ideal venue for dance-related events (it has hosted World Cup Cheer and Dance championships over the last two years).”
After decades of being held in Canberra, organisers decided to shift the national competition to an area thriving with dance schools with Wollongong taking precendence over Melbourne.
DanceSport president Dallas Williams said while nearly two thirds of their memberships hail from Victoria, Wollongong showed great potential due to the number of schools in the region and in Sydney.
The event covers competition from seasoned professionals to weekend warriors, from primary age children to dancers over 65.
Saturday June 24 is the pick for spectators wanting to watch Australia’s best, who will be vying for international selection.
Registrations for competitors are still open.
