It has been a relatively quiet time for Lions this past fortnight. Our main focus is on our 100th Centenary party at the Pavilion on June 2. Let’s face it, we have a lot to celebrate. Since we were chartered some 40+ years ago, we have grown our own club into one of the biggest in the state and formed three other local clubs.
The dinner meeting on the 25th featured the two boys who we sponsored for the Outward Bound Course. We always look forward to hearing their views on its effect on them.
The news on our Respite cottage is that we received 99 strips of cladding thanks to CSR. We have decided to paint them first before erection which will be safer than having lots of volunteers on scaffolding. We are now considering replacing all the windows first which will also make the fitting of the cladding easier. We have a number of donated items in storage so we are actively seeking a shipping container to store them in.
KIAMA ROTARY
Our club celebrated the 100th birthday of the Rotary Foundation at the Kiama Leagues Club last week together with family, friends and representatives from the Rotary Clubs of Shellharbour, Gerringong and Dapto. We were also joined by the District Governor, Assistant DG, District Secretary and the Manager of The Rotary Foundation South Pacific & Philippines.
The Rotary Foundation was established in 1917, 12 years after Rotary’s birth in 1905. The initial donation was a humble $26.50 but since then, the Foundation has contributed more than $3 billion to life-changing, sustainable projects around the world including polio eradication and peace scholarships.
The Rotary Foundation’s PolioPlus project was launched in 1985, the first such initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. We are now very close to eradicating this horrible disease. When the project started, there were over 350,000 cases of polio around the world each year. So far in 2017 there have been just five cases.
Thanks to the generous support of the community over the years, the Rotary Club of Kiama has donated over $89,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
Kiama CWA
Many thanks to our guest speaker from our last meeting, Rose Childe from Kiama Council who spoke on recycling in Kiama. Rose provided a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic discussion on the method and benefit to our community of the Council recycling program.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, June 20 at the CWA hall at the rear of 70 Shoalhaven St. At 11am we will have the report from our delegates at the recent State Conference at Tumbi Umbi. BYO lunch, after which we will have our normal business meeting at 1pm. Visitors and new members are most welcome.
Our hall hire has some vacancies so contact Jan on 4233 2314.
