The event coincides with the Knights’ clash against arch-rival the Berry Magpies at Kiama Showground.

Former player Ken Condon, who was part of the premiership-winning Kiama team of 1969, said he will be attending the reunion to reminisce over old times.

“I came here in 1968, played half a season in 68’ and all the season in 69’ when we won the competition and about three games in 1970 until I broke my nose and I was told to give it away,” he said.

“I played fullback down here, but in Mudgee I started off as a young fella at 15 or 16 years of age, as halfback, five-eighth, you name it.”

Mr Condon said the reunion provided a great opportunity to catch up with friends and other former players. 

“It is always good to meet up with the old fellas, we’re getting a bit old and there might not be many of left by now,” he chuckled.

Robert Hill is one of three brothers who all played for Kiama.

“I played from the mid-fifties to the mid-sixties,” he said.

“I liked the club mostly because of all the people who were in it, in those days and when Kenny was here it was a town thing.

“It wasn’t like it is now, we all went to work, we went training (very little training).

“We hated Gerringong, we hated Jamberoo, and they would say the same thing about us.”

Kiama Knights Senior Rugby League Club marked their centenary in 2014 with a huge celebration and each year have attracted a good turnout of former and current players.

“The last few we have had, have been very successful,” Mr Hill said. 

“We get to meet all the people from our generation, but we also get to meet the younger ones coming through who are now playing first grade for Kiama. 

“We probably know their fathers and uncles, but we don’t know them, and we get to see them play and they look and talk so differently in person to when they’re on the field.” 

The full afternoon of rugby league from each of the grades will be followed up by a celebration in the Kiama Pavilion for a few drinks and pizza.

Former players will also take to the field in an old boys fun match, some of the familiar faces include Brian ‘I’m thirsty’ Taber, Terry ‘Bones’ Boniface and Shaun ‘Timmo’ Timmins.

Kiama Knights Senior Rugby League Club will be holding a golf day fundraiser on Sunday, June 11.
