Allan James Jarrett, 31, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, reckless grievous bodily harm, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of contravening an apprehended violence order in Nowra District Court.
He also faced charges of driving a vehicle menacing another, common assault, damaging property and a Commonwealth charge of using a carriage service to menace.
Court papers said Jarrett viciously assaulted his former partner in March 2016.
The court heard the couple had known each other for nine months and had been in an relationship for three months, during which time the victim was exposed to physical, emotional and mental abuse.
Court papers said the first assault at North Nowra on March 11, 2016 left the woman with a fractured collarbone that required surgery after he threw her down stairs and two broken ribs after he kicked her in the abdomen.
The court heard Jarrett had been smoking methamphetamine and had become aggressive and argumentative.
He demanded to see the victim's phone to see her contact list.
While doing so he grabbed both the woman’s hands and dragged and threw her downstairs from a verandah, breaking her collarbone.
He then kicked the woman in the abdomen, breaking two ribs, before grabbing her by the hair and continuing the attack, punching her in the face a number of times.
Under the insistence of another person Jarrett took the victim to the Shoalhaven Hospital but coerced her to tell medical staff she had “fallen down the stairs”.
He stayed with her during her treatment.
After receiving treatment they returned to the North Nowra address where Jarrett continued his verbal abuse, and hit the victim in the head with a metal spoon, splitting her head open.
The woman’s parents attended the home the next day to see their daughter, however Jarrett refused them access.
Concerned for the woman’s welfare they contacted police who attended and took the woman to her parents’ house.
Despite saying to police “look what he has done to me” she would not report the assault as she was in fear of what Jarrett would do.
On March 25 between 8pm and 9pm, the court heard the woman and a friend were in Wallace Street, Nowra when approached by Jarrett.
Jarrett pushed the woman along the road towards Journal Street, Nowra, at one stage punching her in the back of the head.
All the time he was asking her who she had been sleeping with.
The court heard at a home in Journal Street, he grabbed the woman around the neck and squeezed hard, restricting her breathing before again punching he in the face.
The court heard on April 6 the same year he used a vehicle to menace the woman and another friend while they were travelling along Kalandar Street, Nowra.
Court documents said Jarrett followed the two women in the vehicle and used his car to block their access into Wallace Street at the roundabout.
The women continued west on Kalandar Street and performed a U-turn at the Archer Resort, travelling back to McKay Street with Jarrett in close pursuit.
A number of cars were forced to brake and take evasive action to avoid a collision.
The women turned their vehicle again, travelling west on Kalandar Street before stopping at the Archer Resort, where Jarrett allegedly said he wanted to get some personal items from the vehicle’s boot.
Police received a number of triple 0 calls about the manner of the driving and arrested Jarrett in the vehicle at Falls Creek.
Judge Ian McClintock sentenced Jarrett to six years’ jail from April 7, 2016 with a non-parole period of four years.
While in custody he is ordered to have psychiatric assessments, take part in a violent offenders treatment program and domestic violence program.
He will be eligible for parole on April 6, 2020.
