Upgrade works to the building were called to a halt on Tuesday, following an inspection by council staff.

The decision came after pool-users met on-site on Saturday to protest the works, which necessitated moving the pool-facing entryways to the northern (women’s) and southern (men’s) ends of the building.

The change unintentionally provided passers-by with a clear view into the women’s changing space, and meant anyone wanting to use the women’s toilets had to first walk past the open plan showers.

Council staff would now prepare an alternate design which addressed the location of access ways and any potential privacy issues, Mayor Marianne Saliba said. 

Preliminary plans would be shared with councillors and interested parties before being further developed, the mayor added. 

“We’re confident this can be achieved with a re-working of the amenities building design.”

The building contractor has advised the previous entrances would be re-open to the community by the end of this week, with the newly-created doorways closed up.
