At Tuesday’s meeting, Kiama council approved the second stage of plans to redevelop the Uniting Mayflower aged care facility on Belinda Street, Gerringong.
A packed gallery erupted into applause at the meeting following the decision.
The $20 million redevelopment will include accommodation and communal spaces, based on a ‘household’ model of care, where residents live in smaller groups or ‘households’.
Each household will have its own kitchen, dining and lounge areas.
Other features will include landscaped gardens, an on-site café, chapel, a community and wellness centre, and a range of adaptable activity areas for the enjoyment of residents, their families and friends.
Leonie Stewart has been a Uniting Mayflower Independent Living resident for more than six years.
Mrs Stewart has a long connection with Uniting Mayflower as her parents were among the first residents to move in back in 1982.
Mrs Stewart said most of the Uniting Mayflower community is supportive of the redevelopment.
“I'm very keen for it to go ahead,” she said.
“I moved here so that I wouldn't need to move again later in my retirement. The new residential aged care facility will be first-class providing peace of mind for me and my family.”
The site in question currently contains the Mayflower Retirement Village and is surrounded by residential land containing principally dwellings. Greta Street bounds the land to the east, Belinda Street to the north and unformed Rowlins Road to the west.
A total of 46 car parking spaces are to be provided on-site for staff, visitors and an ambulance.
