Once upon a time, driving to the South Coast during one of the big holiday periods was awful.

Not because of the South Coast itself, which as we know, is pretty good.
But rather the traffic; the slow, bumper-to-bumper traffic with cars full of people wanting everyone else to disappear so they could get to their destination and start their holiday sooner.
Remember the horror of the Minnamurra bends just north of Kiama? Those long snakes of traffic in each direction always seemed to be there and just got exponentially worse during holidays.
That alone would be enough to make people reconsider their trip.
These days, that section is a breeze; we can drive along the north Kiama bypass (built by the previous Labor government) with the car set to cruise control.
Until we hit the end of the Kiama bends, where traffic would merge into one tiny lane.
Where you’d get stuck behind someone who thinks it’s the law to travel 20 clicks under the posted speed limit.
That doesn’t happen any more, because of the first stage of the Princes Highway upgrade – built by the Liberals, although planning started under the previous Labor government
This week, the highway upgrade that will bypass the Foxground bends was officially opened, making the disaster of getting stuck behind a caravan going up and down those hills a thing of the past.
Perhaps of even more interest was the news that the bypass of Berry was expected to be open in time for the next big holiday period – Christmas.
Between Wollongong and Nowra, Berry was one of the two big pinch points as a never-ending stream of holiday traffic crawled through the town.
The other big pinch point is the highway through Albion Park Rail. After years of waiting, work on a bypass is on track to start within two years.
There is a sense of impatience from some that the Albion Park Rail bypass hasn’t already started.
Perhaps when they drive south for the Easter school holidays, they should focus on what has already been done.
They should focus on the improvements already made to that drive down south.
Because when you can rush past at 100km/h, overtaking slow caravans with ease it’s not hard to take that for granted and forget how it used to be.
