The boardriders kicked off the day with the U13’s boys competition, fiercely contested by some very competent up-and-coming surfers. The division was won by Phillip Davies, with Matt Driscoll in 2nd, Michael Davies 3rd and Thor Weston very close behind in 4th.
This was followed up by the Micro Groms Division. With some pretty decent waves coming through, the boys impressed with their quick pop-ups and cool demeanour on the waves. Asher Hoar took out the division, closely followed by George van Zyl in 2nd,and Cody Eddie in 3rd.
Cody also might have just taken out wipe-out of the day, but impressed the judges when he paddled straight back out for another wave. That’s what we like to see!
Next up was the U18 boys, a popular division; however a lull in the waves made it difficult for the boys to impress the judges.
The division went down to the wire in the finals, with Phillip Davies winning, closely followed by Brandon Feledyk in a great showing to finish 2nd, and Tom Driscoll in 3rd.
Conditions had deteriorated slightly by the time of the U18 girls division, making the girls dig deep to show the judges what they could do. Lani Rogerson managed to pull off some tricky moves winning the heat, followed by Crystal Davies in 2nd, and Anna Woolnaugh in 3rd.
Men’s Longboards were next, with some very impressive moves. Probably the coolest moves of the day went to the Division’s first place winner, Ray Lawrence, showing us all how it’s done on the longboard. Rusty Clark put in a solid effort to finish 2nd, with Bert Driscoll’s coffin’s move ensuring he placed 3rd.
It was an impressive turnout then for the Open Women’s Division. Again - deteriorating conditions made the final quite a challenge, but the ladies were up for it.
Jodie Hoar had an impressive first wave, putting her firmly in front, but a late and consistent showing by Belinda Weston ensured she won the final, with Jodie in 2nd, and Therese Craner 3rd.
None of the competitors were showing their age in the Men’s Over 45’s Division, with impressive cutbacks, a few floaters and many other manoeuvres on show. The final was won by a skilful and consistent Steve Waite just back in the water after shoulder surgery, followed by Ackers in 2nd, and Bert Driscoll coming in 3rd.
The most hotly contested division of the day, was the Open Men’s, with 25 competitors, five full heats, two semis and a final.
In the end, the final was won by Matt Hoar, followed by Steve Waite in 2nd, Tom Driscoll in 3rd and Paddy Gunn in 4th. A special thanks to the people to put so much time into making the day run so smoothly, Helen and Jim for manning the barbecue all day. We all know a happy crew runs on its’ stomach!
