According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 1999 smash hit is set to once again grace our screens in some capacity, and screenwriter Zak Penn has apparently been sounded out to write a treatment.
Penn has pedigree in the sci-fi realm in recent years, being involved in the story development for the X-Men series as well as The Avengers.
At this stage there is no suggestion that either the Wachowski sisters, who directed the original three films, or Keanu Reeves, who played the protagonist Neo, are involved. The rumours surrounding the remake also hinted that Michael B. Jordan was going to star in the new film. Jordan is best known for his role as the title character in the film Creed, as well as runs on TV classics The Wire and Friday Night Lights, among other work.
In February, Reeves told Yahoo that he would be interested in being involved in another Matrix film, but only if the directors were to return as well.
"They would have to write it and direct it. And then we'd see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that'd be weird, but why not?"
The first film was released to positive reviews and an overwhelmingly positive reception from viewers. It currently sits as the 17th-best film of all time on IMDb, and won four Oscars - all of which were in honour of the film's ground-breaking sound and special effects.
Although the other two movies in the trilogy (The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions) are not remembered as fondly, the series as a whole grossed over $US1.6 billion worldwide and starred Australian actor Hugo Weaving.
