Festival music director Ross Eggleton said, “Our Festival grows every year as we have a reputation for world class music across all jazz and blues genres – all absolutely free so kudos to the venues and our supporters.”
Eat to the Beat will perform at selected cafes and restaurants and Young Bands Come Out to Play in Hindmarsh Park on the Saturday. Sunday features the Gospel service and All Day Jazz and Blues Concert in Hindmarsh Park.
For children, John Littrich’s Rockalots will perform fun and educational jazz, rock blues and reggae from 11am on the Saturday in Coronation Park.
Pena Flamenca is a well-known Sydney ensemble that will perform on Saturday March 11 from 8.30pm-11pm at the Kiama Leagues Club.
Percussionist/pianist Byron Mark joined eight-piece Pena Flamenca in 2011, and in 2015 they performed at the Kiama Jazz Festival. This will also be Byron's 10th appearance at the Kiama Jazz Festival, after years of performing there together with renowned guitarist/vocalist Luke Koteras, as Kinetic Method.
“We are very excited to have special guest Oscar Jimenez up from Melbourne performing with us,” Byron said. “It’s a two-set show with the first set bringing a flamenco presentation, featuring dancer Lauren Majarres; followed by a heart-pumping energy filled Latin/flamenco fusion set featuring Oscar Jimenez.”
In celebration of the 30th Festival there will be two collaborative exhibitions - the first group show - “All That Jazz” was launched at the Little Blowhole Art Bar on March 2 and will run for a month. This show will include work from Jamie Cole, Greg Vale, Belinda Brooks, Karen Wright, Gitte Backhausen, Mikey Freedom & Becky Guggisberg.
Local artists will exhibit at the Old Fire Station Gallery in “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”.
It opens Thursday March 9 and includes work by Mikey Freedom, Gregor Cullen, Auguste Blackman, Brigita Hammel, Janine Coddington and Becky Guggisberg.
New work will be exhibited beside vintage Kiama Jazz posters that hark back to Redback Graphics and those screen printed by Dennis Cox and Jeff Hewitt at the KHS art department. Redback Graphics aka Gregor Cullen will also bless the fire station with a classic poster and one of his current pieces.
Kiama’s Mikey Freedom, who created the commemorative 30th anniversary Festival poster and T-shirt, will grace the Vinnies wall in Terralong St with a jazz-inspired mural, painted over the three days of the Festival.
