Kiama council has asked residents of the municipality to show care when selecting items for its Kerbside Clean Up this month.
Council’s waste management officer Josephine St John said a common mistake people made was placing reusable or recyclable items out for collection.
“All eligible materials placed out for collection, other than steel, are not recycled and not reused irrespective of what condition they are in,” Ms St John said.
“The materials are placed in the back of the collection truck which crushes the material and then this is sent to landfill.”
Ms St John said households with any pre-loved items in good condition should consider other options, such as:
*Register for Second Hand Saturday (March 25). This community car boot sale only costs a gold coin to register. More information is available from council’s website.
*Drop your items to Shellharbour council’s new Resource Recovery Centre at Dunmore or Shoalhaven council’s Berry Waste Depot.
*Donate to your nearest charity op shop.
*Post your item on the many local buy, swap and sell pages available on Facebook.
“If you have items that are past their used by date, but can be recycled, you can drop them off at our new Community Recycling Centre (CRC) for free,” Ms St John said.
“The new CRC takes an amazing range of material for recycling, from silage to Styrofoam, car batteries and gas bottles.”
Information about what you can drop off at the Community Recycling Centre is available from the council website at www.kiama.nsw.gov.au
Residents are advised to check their 2016/18 waste and recycling calendars to find out when the Household Kerbside Clean Up is happening in their zone and what items they can leave on their kerb.
