Mayor Mark Honey said council was giving away 3,000 bags of compost made from its OK Organics Kiama initiative, which he said had significantly reduced the waste going to landfill.
Under this program, kitchen waste is collected from homes and taken to SoilCo at Kembla Grange for processing into compost.
“Kiama residents have done a great job getting behind OK Organics Kiama, using their green lid bins and ensuring we have our food scraps and other organic waste going to compost not landfill,” Cr Honey said.
There’s no need to polish up the wheelbarrow just yet – the giveaway is not happening until International Compost Awareness Week which starts on May 7.
Kiama council said its OK Compost Kiama program had achieved the following:
- 76 per cent of all waste collected by Kiama Council is being composted or recycled (compared to 56 per cent prior to OK Organics Kiama).
- In 2015/16 there were 6049 tonnes of waste recovered (recycled or composted) an increase of 1839 tonnes.
- The amount of waste going to landfill has dropped to 24 per cent, compared to 44 per cent prior to OK Organics Kiama.
