The strategy to boost regional participation in defence contracting includes an initiative for the Illawarra to “explore opportunities to help reduce congestion in Fleet Base East”.
A Department of Industry spokesman said this was not “suggesting the relocation of the Navy's operations” but was simply about reducing “congestion”.
“We will do this by targeting opportunities for other ports to alleviate congestion at Garden Island by developing additional capacity at other locations,” the spokesman said.
“The strategy will support the Navy for the long-term and also help grow and develop the industries that provide key services and products to the Navy.”
