Embrace tells the story of Taryn Brumfitt’s journey from body loather to body lover.
The Australian woman embarks on an international crusade to change the way we think and feel about our bodies.
Brumfitt founded the Body Image Movement, which aims to recognise the importance of body diversity and redefine beauty ideals.
The film seeks to uncover why poor body image has become a global issue and what women everywhere can do to have a brighter future.
After screening at last year’s Sydney Film Festival, Embrace was released in cinemas nationally in August.
Kiama Downs resident Angela Clark has organised the Kiama screening.
“I saw the film a couple of times last year and was really inspired by it myself,” she said.
“It has a really positive message that a lot of young women need to hear… A really good message that healthy living is important.
“Come and join us to raise awareness and be part of the conversation.”
Mrs Clark works in healthcare, focusing on chronic disease management.
“I see a lot of people with diabetes and other health problems,” she said.
“The message of healthy living and a healthy mindset is one I want to send.
“It’s not about what you look like, but about nurturing your body and treating it with respect, and keeping as healthy as you can.”
The screening will take place on Friday, March 3 at 6.30pm for a 7pm start at North Kiama Neighbourhood Centre.
Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite (www.eventbrite.com.au) for $15 (plus booking fee), or $20 at the door (subject to availability).
Mrs Clark said all proceeds would go, “to the educational and social outreach program that is being developed on the back of the film’s success”.
“There are programs being rolled out in Australian schools to help educate young people on the importance of positive body image, so the funds will go to support the program,” she said.
Cold drinks, tea and coffee will be provided as well as some nibbles.
