“Each year, approximately one in five Australians will experience a mental illness and the effect of this can have an impact on that person’s family, friends and fellow workers,” David Chambers, president of Kiama Rotary said.
Kiama Rotary will therefore again host two Mental Health First Aid Certificate Courses in Kiama next month.
“We are delighted to be able to run these courses in Kiama again this year,” Mr Chambers said.
“We have been running them for over a decade now and have seen several hundred local citizens participate and gain a greater understanding of the challenges surrounding mental health.”
Each course is two days in duration and will be held at The Pavilion, Kiama.
Courses 1 and 2 are the same.
*Course 1 is on Thursday and Friday, March 2-3 from 9am to 5pm.
*Course 2 is on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 28-29 from 9am to 5pm.
There is no cost for Kiama residents to attend these certified courses but the purchase of the $35 course manual is required for completion.
A certificate of attendance will be issued upon completion of the course.
A fee may be charged for representatives from organisations or those who receive government funding for mental health first aid training.
Mr Chambers said this was an opportunity for the public and professionals to gain a better understanding of how to help and comfort persons suffering a mental illness.
Contact Rotarian Helen Stirling at 0438 093 178 or email helenstirling@bigpond.com for more information or to make a booking.
Both days of the selected course must be attended to receive the certificate.
Preference will be given to residents of the Kiama municipality.
