Young Narooma angler Georgia Poyner posted some magnificent photos of leaping marlin after going out on fellow local Brett MacDonald’s Northbank boat yesterday.

“Long day cruising with not much action until finally we hooked a little black marlin on a skippy. The boys took it in turns to land it while I photographed the fish jumping. Released safe and sound with a tag.” Well done guys!
Bermi Bait and Tackle reports not much else out wide with big seas today so local Rooster went chasing bass in the freshwater getting at least one cracker on surface lures.
Yesterday, Scotty posted that a multi-day SST chart gives us a good idea still of where that better patch of water is moving too or at the least holding. “The top of that water was inside the edge at 36'49 yesterday and was south of that the day before. It looks like it will continue pushing in and north with a few fish in it. No fishing for a couple of days yet. Friday and Saturday look fishable.”
On Monday, Matt on Croma and crew went down south for a look and found the fish at 36'52 inside the edge and tagged one saw a lot of fish tailing but bait was scarce.
Three mates have come close to breaking the world spearfishing record for the biggest marlin off the coast at Eden – an achievement that one of them already holds.
Timmy Knight, of Canberra, was fishing on the shelf about an hour out from Eden on Sunday with Kyran ‘The Bollard’ Crane of Eden and Luke ‘The Deckhand’ Pattrick, also from Canberra, when he speared a 138.5 kilo South Coast striped marlin.
It was only 900 grams short of the world record claimed by Luke last year. Click here for more
On the estuaries, things have turned bad on at least one lake and not sure if the recent rain was enough to save them. Tilba Lake has a bad smell with reports of dead prawns lining banks.
Things remain good in Wagonga Inlet and Narooma local Ian “Hoots” Cowie managed to get a nice jewfish during an afternoon fish last week.
“Went out wide this morning chasing marlin without success...so went up the estuary in the arvo and got a jewie instead....the beauty of living in Narooma,” he posted.
Wallaga Lake meanwhile also continues to fish well with one local getting some nice garfish off the bridge this week.
Now here are the two Narooma clubs and their fishing news:
There was a very large turn-out this weekend at Club Narooma’s Bowlo Fishing Club comp and it kept our weighmaster and his crew busy for a good hour working out who were the winners and grinners for the month.
It was great to see Garry Blood take out this month’s prize of top fisherman and he was not alone with returns as Dennis Maggys, Les Hodgson, Greg Tiffen and son Will, Bec and Shortie, Karen Spackman, Jack Bennett, Michelle Simpson all get a trophy.
Next month sees us fishing from March 3-5 then a few weeks later it’s our freshwater competition at Buckenderra so that will keep a few of us busy. The Pirtek fishing challenge is on again on Sunday, March 19 and is a real fun competition and it’s all for prostate cancer foundation. Another interesting project is a study on the East Coast snapper fishery which looks like a good project to have a say on.
There have been a few on the sick list with our local bream man Mick Kavic not well and long-time member Colin Clark in Mourya having troubles, so best wishes from your fellow fisherman. With the warm water here, the tourists gone and the FAD working, it’s that time of the year to start fishing! Tight lines to next month. – Fish Fingers
NSGFC report
I‘m happy to report some of our members are having success on the water. Ian Smith claims he has broken the drought after five hours trolling without turning a reel! He caught a 73cm dolphinfish or mahi mahi, also morwong, snapper and some flathead last Wednesday with skipper Matt Betts on The Sheriff. Members Digger Cowie, Mick and Shane Ovington have also been part of the mahi mahi bite, landing some great fish. Diggers measured 1.3m long!
Mick and Shane Ovington ventured out again on Sunday where Shane manage to land a 56kg mako shark. They tell me he hooked it though the dorsal fin and it took about 25 minutes to land. Most fish are coming off the Fisheries FAD, placed off Montague Island. Our fishing license monies pay for these placements every year and yes, they do work!
Club members, friends and any other interested members of the public are invited to a meeting at the clubrooms on Friday, Feb. 10 at 5pm with Shayne from RMS Maritime to clarify the new regulations regarding life jackets and any other matters. As usual the Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club rooms will be open for fish stories, drinks and snacks from 4pm till 9pm on Friday. Visitors welcome. – Jan Hemmingsen
