Mikelangelo has received great accolades for his performances from London to Edinburgh to Montreal to Auckland and beyond, but the Far South Coast of NSW always holds a very special place in his heart. Growing up in Canberra, it was a regular family holiday destination, but more recently he spent time living in Tathra, writing songs strongly influenced by the spectacular landscape of the area.
Mikelangelo is well known in the South Coast region for his strikingly original performances with his ongoing group the Black Sea Gentlemen. Seeing Mikelangelo in solo performance is something else entirely, allowing for an even greater intimacy with the audience and a vulnerability that is electrically charged.
Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen stole his heart and soul as a teenager, and now, in his own inimitable style, Mikelangelo delivers a stirring homage to these men who helped set him on his musical path.
The show brings together a formidable collection of songs, stripped back to reveal anew the potency of the words and melodies of these great artists.
With the recent death of Cohen, many of the songs become even more emotionally powerful. Just this month, Mikelangelo curated a huge Cohen tribute concert at the Sydney Festival. The concert was an immediate sell-out success, and Mikelangelo will include some of these songs in the Murrah Hall concert.
Having toured the world to great acclaim from the Sydney Opera House to London’s West End, Mikelangelo is one of Australia’s rising stars. He has appeared RocKwiz and The Project and has featured on ABC Radio’s Conversations with Richard Fidler and Philip Adams Late Night Live.
In 2014 he released his live album of Cave, Waits and Cohen songs entitled Some Velvet Evening, which will be available at the show, as well as via his website, www.mikelangelo.net.au.
Don’t miss Mikelangelo with his mesmerizing charm, swagger and talent.
Entry is $20 or $15 concession, kids free. Doors open at 7pm and the famous Murrah curry will be available for hungry patrons.
“A dream scenario, with the velvet-voiced Mikelangelo taking the reins it was like a gig divinely arranged.” THE BRAG
“Spine tingling...commanding...stunning...” THE MERCURY
“Traversing genres and decades, the dapper crooner went from the serious to the sublime with Cave’s hymn-like Into My Arms, Cohen’s Hallelujah and a foot-stamping, acapella version of Tom Waits’ Hang on St Christopher. Mikelangelo is something of a superhero...” BEAT
