Last winter, Palacios took to the sky with a group of Australia’s best landscape photographers as part of the ‘Light Collective’. 

Together, they set out a journey to capture the South Australian oasis known as Kati Thanda from above. 

“We were so lucky,” he said.

“From the land, [Lake Eyre] is featureless. There’s not many features to follow. 

“When we took a plane … we were able to get beautiful forms and abstract images. Everywhere was filled with different colours and shapes, and we worked with that.” 

The expedition, which saw more than six thousand photos taken, forms part of a larger project called ‘RGB’ – also known as ‘Red, Green, Blue’.

Using photography, Palacios and the ‘Light Collective’ will showcase Australia’s natural landscape drawing on red, green and blue features. 

Palacios said he hopes to capture areas that are endangered. 

“We are going to go to specific areas of the country for each of the colours,” he said.

“This year we are planning to go to the Great Barrier Reef and we want to go to areas that are endangered.” 

The works are currently being exhibited at Black Eye Gallery, Darlinghurst as part of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. Interpretations from the Air. 

A collection of aerial photographs will also feature in the ‘Light Collective’s upcoming book, Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre.

Palacios has received a number of photography awards, including the Australian Geographic International Landscape Photographer of the Year in 2016 and Image of the Year.
