The club’s 16th annual competition raised $1823 from 74 entries in three divisions - under-6, under-11 and under-16 – plus $500 from Minnamurra Lions Club’s charity barbecue, bringing the total for the fundraiser to $2323. 

​Kiama Game Fishing Club president Mark Way said the event was beneficial for not only kids, but also the community. 

“It’s a great event and it gets kids out and away from computers,” Mr Way said.

“It often involves parents and is a great way for people to get out and enjoy the sun with their children. 

“They get a big kick out of it.

“In addition to benefiting the participants, all proceeds raised by the Shimano Children’s Charity Fishing Competition are donated to Peterborough School.”

In addition to encouraging kids to take part in the sport it also allows youngsters to learn about sustainable fishing.

“As part of the process, the Game Fishing Club is involved with tag and release,” he said.

“We have that concept involved throughout the whole process. 

“The kids have the opportunity to catch fish, have them weighed as well as return them to sea.

“In reality, fishing is one of the most popular sports in Australia. 

“Seeing the kids weighing their fish in is fantastic.”

Given the success of this year’s competition, Mr Way said it will be an event that will continue to add value to Kiama.

“Each year is an opportunity to introduce fishing to children and it is also a family activity,” he said.

“The feedback I have had from the event has been fantastic and we are very lucky to have good weather meaning a lot of people have turned out for the event.”
