The fire, which is being regarded as suspicious, started in difficult terrain on Saturday afternoon, in an area adjacent to the Vincentia Golf Club, bordered by Frederick Street.
NSW Rural Fire Service district officer Bradley Collins said fire investigators and NSW Police were investigating the cause of the blaze.
“The fire was reported between 2.30pm and 3pm,” Mr Collins said.
“The fire was burning in difficult terrain, with a lot of coastal heath and other bush.
“At the height of the blaze we had 20 appliances fighting the blaze.”
Brigades from Huskisson, Crossroads, St Georges Basin, Sussex Inlet, Tomerong, Callala Bay, Illaroo Road, Cunjurong Point, Milton, Tabourie, Bawley Point, Kangaroo Valley, Greenwell Point, Currarong and Shoalhaven Heads fought the blaze over the weekend.
“We also had a crew from the National Parks and Wildlife Service,” he said.
Due to the difficult terrain, a water bombing helicopter was called in to assist.
“Coastal heath areas burn ferociously, so we tend not to put crews into those sorts of situations,” Mr Collins said.
“Crews worked hard to contain the blaze and undertook backburning late Saturday evening.”
He said overnight rain on the fireground had helped crews which finally brought the blaze under control on Sunday.
“At no point were any homes in danger,” Mr Collins said.
The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious with NSWRFS fire investigators and NSW Police investigating.
