COL RATHBONE
Name: Colin (call me Col) Rathbone.
Occupation: Was manager at Cukuna Timber/Big River for 30 years, five months and 15 days but I wasn’t counting. Am now happily retired for 15 months (now I am counting).
Suburb: Kiama, overlooking Easts Beach, Beachside Estate.
Hometown: Kiama for 40 years, but born and grew up in Griffith. Before you ask, I knew Al Grassby (he had the most colourful ties) and Bob Trimbole, but left when grass was something the sheep ate.
What brought you to the area: My dad had bought a block of land when Beachside Estate was released in the ‘60’s. We had the house here that we rented out and lived in Northmead while working in Castle Hill. In the late ‘70’s I got sick of the traffic on Windsor Road, gave it all away and we moved to Kiama.
Hobbies: Playing around with our horses, especially with the Light Horse on Anzac Day.
Fun fact about you: The grandkids tell me I have eyebrows like a gorilla.
My favourite thing about the area is: The terrific sense of community spirit that is shown by shop owners and the public alike when I am collecting for various charities.
What makes the area unique: Great climate, great scenery, great people.
