This year marks the start of the next 25 years of fundraising at the Gerringong branch’s biggest CMRI event – the Annual Quilt and Craft Show at Gerringong Town Hall.

This event will take place on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12 from 9am to 5pm, and Sunday, November 13 from 9am to 3pm.
There will be morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch available, a quilt raffle, wide range of stalls with quilting supplies, craft, clothing and children’s wear, jewellery, home-made Christmas cakes and puddings, sweets, cakes and slice for sale.
Since its inception in 1991 the quilt show has been a successful fundraising event.
According to Lorraine Peade, secretary of Children’s Medical Research Institute’s Gerringong committee, thanks to the continued support of locals and visitors the profits from this event have been significant.
Along with the money raised through catering, the Jeans for Genes campaign and a variety of special events, the CMRI Gerringong committee has been able to contribute a sum of $1.9 million since 1959.
Gerringong is one of 27 committees from throughout the state and the funds contributed by these volunteers make up nearly 50 per cent of the funds used to ensure the best research practices.
Government grants and investment returns make up the remaining 50 per cent.
The success of the quilt show and all the group’s fundraising is based on the hard work of all the members who cook, wash up, serve, sell raffle tickets, organise and attend events and give their time willingly.
Members range in age from early 20’s to over 90’s.
New members are always welcome.
Special tribute should be paid to Life Member Rhonda Bailey, who has been a key organiser of the quilt show and Jeans for Genes events over many years.
Work on display at this year’s Quilt and Craft Show will include more than 30 quilts from the Illawarra Quilters and wall hangings by Merelyn Pearce.
Everyone receives a lucky door prize ticket on entry to the Quilt Show and the winner will be drawn at the close of day (3pm) on Sunday, November 13.
The quilt raffle will also be drawn at that time.
