The 20-year-old woman was a passenger in a Suburu Impreza that collided with a Holden Astra in the southbound lanes of Windang Road about 6pm Saturday.
Police have been told a 71-year-old woman was attempting to turn the Astra into a driveway in the moments leading to the crash.
On impact, the Astra crashed through the brick fence of a neighbouring property before hitting a Toyota Hilux parked in the driveway. The elderly woman and her 46-year-old male passenger suffered minor injuries and were transported to Wollongong Hospital.
The Impreza mounted the footpath and hit a washing machine and fridge on the nature strip. Inside the car, a 24-year male driver and a four-year-old boy in the backseat were unhurt. The 20 year old woman required medical attention for injuries categorised by police as serious, and was transported to Wollongong Hospital.
Dean Bendall heard the collision from his house across the road.
“There was a loud crash, then about two seconds after that there was an even louder crash, and that must have been the car going into the wall,” he said.
“Outside, everyone was running everywhere. There was a lady in the car that went through the fence. They dragged her out and rested her on the side of the footpath. They had her laying down. She was pretty shocked.”
Mr Bendall and his wife Alison Louth have lived on Windang Road for two years. They say they often feel uneasy about slowing down to enter their own driveway amid traffic travelling at the signposted 80kmh limit.
Worse though were the drivers who exceeded the limit, Mr Bendall said.
“People use this as a bloody drag strip,” Mr Bendall said.
“They just get lead foots here.
“Quite often we’ll hear a bang on the road and we just say, ‘you’ve got to be kidding’.
“They should have [speed] cameras here. They’ve got to do something about it. There’s going to be more of it.”
Saturday’s crash occurred about 700 metres from the site where a 32-year-old woman was cut from the wreckage of a white station wagon that collided with a cement mixing truck, and hit a third vehicle, on September 21. The woman was one of two hospitalised. Police believe the station wagon had been turning right from Bakers Lane when the crash occurred.
A week earlier, another three-vehicle collision in a near-identical location claimed the life of 18-year-old Jesse Brown. Nineteen-year-old Jay Geoghegan, who was travelling in a separate vehicle that was not involved in the crash, has since been charged with dangerous driving.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Crash Investigation Unit are conducting inquiries into Saturday’s collision.
UPDATE: The pregnant woman has since departed Wollongong Hospital.
