Relay for Life is a 24-hour event that raises funds for the Cancer Council.
This year’s Kiama Relay will take place on October 22-23 at Kiama Leisure Centre fields.
This year marks the seventh Kiama Relay for Life.
Participants are welcome to stay at the event for as little as one hour, or can take the challenge and attempt to have a member of their team on the track for 24 hours.
One team participating will be ‘Hay House and Friends’.
Team captain Angela Hay said this was the first year this particular team had been formed for the Relay.
“Last year my kids did it for their birthday parties, instead of having birthday parties… Instead of getting presents they gave donations to cancer,” she said.
“This year we’re just doing it as a family fun thing, and a lot of the kids’ parents from last year wanted to come this year.
“Both my father and my father-in-law have had cancer in the the past couple of years, and it’s just touched so many people around us.
“So we thought we’d try and raise as much money as we can.”
The Relay’s chairperson Marie Dalton said the Kiama committee had set a fundraising goal of $100,000 for the 2016 event.
“We’ve got some terrific entertainment, and we’re doing a few different things like our pop-up picnic,” she said.
“There will be lots of activities for families and kids, so we’re really encouraging people to come out on the day and enjoy it.
“It’s a great event for bringing the community together for a common goal.
“Most people have been touched by cancer in their lives, and it’s an event where they can come along and join as a community to say, ‘we don’t want this in our futures, and we can do something about working to get rid of it’.”
Some previous Kiama Relays have been adversely affected by inclement weather.
“We’ve had some up and down years, but we’re hoping for a good day on the day and things will go well,” Mrs Dalton said.
