Surf Life Saving NSW is hosting their annual Surf Club Open Day on Sunday, October 16. 

The Kiama, Kiama Downs and Gerringong clubs will be hosting a range of activities, including lifesaving demonstrations, clubhouse tours, barbecues and displays.

Information on how to join your local surf lifesaving club will also be available.

Kiama Surf Life Saving Club will be open to the public from 10am. 

Club manager and vice-president Pat Sutton said the event was an opportunity for the public to “see the facilities, talk to the members, as well as learn what they can do for the club and the club can do for them”.

Mr Sutton said the day also marked the opening of the season for the club’s Nippers.

“The public can see what the juniors do,” he said.

“We’ll also have the Jet Rescue Boat there, which is a unique thing to have.”

Gerringong Surf Life Saving Club is also throwing its doors open.

The day will culminate in Gerringong band Tropical Wax performing in the clubhouse forecourt from 2pm.

Full bar facilities, face-painting and a jumping castle will also be available. 

Club president Richard Payne said the club will also have a number of information stands in place.

“The club is really going from strength to strength at the moment with and we are looking to capitilise on this with a hugely successful open day,” Mr Payne said.

“The open day provides the perfect opportunity to show the community a little of what we do and demonstrate ways in which they can become involved.

“The surf club is a fantastic organisation in that it caters for people from about four years of age right through to senility.

“You don’t even have to patrol the beach. There are plenty of ways people can assist the club be it through admin roles, barbecuing, working the bar or just even turning up socially.”

Activities begin at 12 noon. 

Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving Club captain Josh Douglas said their club would have displays and demonstrations for Nippers, patrols, IRBs and education and training.

“There will be a membership drive to show what the surf club has to offer,” he said.

“There is much more than just getting your Bronze Medallion to help the club out. There are radio officers, First Aid officers, age managers, competition officials and more.”
