Tim and Fiona Burke of Slightly Twisted Productions teamed up with the Narooma Golf Club and the Narooma Kinema to put on a series of shows.
The most successful was the legendary Blacksliders in the Slightly Twisted Lounge at the golf club that drew a crowd of around 200 on Sunday evening. Saturday saw a guitar masterclass with Dom Turner of the Backsliders at the club and an evening of “Art Is” at the Kinema.
The weekend ended with a local talent showcase in the lounge on Monday afternoon where Tim thanked everyone that supported the events and said he was ready to do it all again next year, with more events planned in the meantime.
“The 'Slightly Twisted Weekend' is shifting gears and starts to turn into the 'Slightly Twisted Summer Season',” Tim said. “Lots more announcements very soon plus 'Vintage Vinyl' will be a regular event throughout the year!”
Acts to perform at the Slightly Twisted Lounge at Narooma Golf Club in upcoming months include P.J. O’Brien, Sally King and also Jim Moginie, who will be taking a break from reforming Midnight Oil.
And they have already booked the room at the golf club for next year’s October Long Weekend.
Tim posted on this Facebook on a high after Sunday’s Backsliders gig: “What a night. A fantastic band and what an audience.....a huge thanks to everyone who supported us in our last minute dash in making Narooma extra special over and above it's regular special. Thanks to all you lot we now have the 'Twist Lounge' booked for all four days of the October 'Slightly Twisted Long Weekend' for 2017 at the Narooma Golf Club. We will have weekend passes , more master classes and the 'Slightly Twisted Music Film Festival', huge 'Vintage Vinyl Night', 'Art Is' and then there are the bands and it's all under one roof....Keep you posted.”
Speaking at the local talent showcase on Monday, Tim said he could see young people such as Jakob Poyner getting inspired by the music over the weekend, in particular the Backsliders. Jakob returned to the golf club to play his guitar at the talent showcase wearing his signed Backsliders t-shirt.
Another highlight of the weekend was the raffling by the Narooma Lions Club of a vintage hubcap guitar donated by local craftsman Greg Watts, of Vintage Hub Cap Guitars.
The first prize of the guitar went to Trish Spink and second prize of a dinner voucher at Quarterdeck went to Reuben Sauillima. Tim and Fiona from Slightly Twisted Productions also decided to give four extra prizes of double passes to some shows over the Christmas break.
And the generosity continued because after all was said and done, Greg Watts decided to donate one his special guitars to Tim and Fiona for all their hard work.
“On behalf of Vintage Hub Cap Guitars and the Narooma community, please accept this VW hub cap guitar as a token of our appreciation for the hard work you and Fiona put into the weekend of music and art that was the October long weekend in Narooma,” he posted on Facebook. “It will go down in Narooma history as one of the best weekends ever. Thanks Tim and Fiona. Legends.”
Montague Arts and Crafts Society meanwhile also stepped in, holding its inaugural Cottage Industry Expo at Narooma Sport and Leisure Centre. MACS president Irene Berry said the crowds had been good. “We’d like to do more than one a year if its successful,” Irene said. “It’s about supporting the local creative community so if you’re interested in having a stall contact us at the Narooma Visitor Centre.”
Also a first was the Mystery Bay art and craft trail with more than a dozen residents opening their studios and backyards to show off their own creations, all for sale, with a portion of funds going to charity. Click here for art trail photos
