The first Wollongong Fringe Festival kicked off over the weekend, with skate demos, light installations, bands and DJs crowding into the city’s arts precinct.

Friday’s opening night event attracted hundreds of skate enthusiasts and art lovers, while a program of film screenings and art shows kept audiences entertained over the weekend.
The festival continues this week, in the lead up to Yours and Owls Festival next weekend.
On Monday, art installation Moon Beach at the Wollongong Planetarium promises an “extraterrestrial planetary experience” combining projections and music while, at the arts precinct, Baz Lurhmann’s Great Gatsby will be shown on the big screen. More at www.yoursandowls.com.au

The popular science broadcaster’s presentation will cover everything from climate change to explaining why babies are shaped like footballs - and the truth behind the vaccine-autism link. “I’ll do something that’s got a little humour, a little bit of heavy stuff, a whole bunch of different topics,” he said. “People will laugh and learn, but mainly have a good time.
