Nathan Jeffrey Gates, 30, had been drinking with the man and woman shortly before the attack took place.
Court documents said the trio had been drinking at a Sampson Crescent home in Bomaderry on November 9 last year.
The session continued into the early hours of the following day, with Gates consuming the majority of a cask of wine.
Before walking to a nearby hotel to get more alcohol, the man and woman told Gates they were in a relationship.
When they returned with a bottle of vodka, they noticed Gates’ mood had changed. He was sarcastic towards the man who retreated to a bedroom.
While the woman was consoling the man, Gates entered the room, grabbed her around the chest and punched the man.
The woman managed to get free and Gates left the property.
A short time later, while investigating a noise at the front of the house, the woman saw Gates tip petrol from a lawn mower onto the lawn.
She also noticed petrol on the steps and side of the house.
Police said when confronted, Gates threw a punch at the woman before jumping a nearby fence.
He then threw items at the house, smashing a window.
About half an hour later the woman heard a noise at the rear of the home and looking out a window, saw Gates, who punched the window, shattering it.
He then kicked in the front door before grabbing the woman by the arms, throwing her to the ground before again leaving.
Police were called to the home and remained for half an hour but Gates didn’t return.
Ten minutes after police left, Gates returned. He grabbed the man and bashed his head into the kitchen cupboard.
Trying to defend him, the woman tackled Gates, and they fell to the floor, allowing the man to escape.
Court documents said Gates produced a knife and stabbed the woman in the left shoulder before running out the door.
The woman was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital where three stitches were inserted into her wound.
Police found Gates a short time later at the Bomaderry Railway Station, with a black handled knife and cuts to his wrist.
He was also taken to hospital for treatment and later charged by police.
Gates pleaded guilty before Magistrate Gabriel Fleming on Tuesday to reckless wounding, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault and destroying property.
He was sentenced to 20 months’ jail, with a non-parole period of 12 months.
With time already served, he will be eligible for parole on November 9.
