Supervising lifeguard Andy Mole said council was installing interactive beach access signs at Surf Beach, Bombo Beach and parts of Werri Beach.
“The signs include QR codes which enable people to use their smartphones to access information such as beach safety advice, hazards and whether the beach is patrolled that day,” Mr Mole said.
“They also have an emergency beach access number and cross street reference that can be used as a location point if emergency services are required.
“The signs display general warning symbols relevant to each beach as well as council regulations.”
Council has also stepped up its lifeguard patrols starting with the forthcoming school holidays.
“For the first time we’ll have lifeguards at Werri Beach during the September and April school holidays, as well as the usual patrols over summer,” Mr Mole said.
It is shaping up as a busy summer for council lifeguards, who will also be providing water safety at the World Pro Junior surfing contest in January.
Daily surf reports commence September 26 and will be posted to council’s website and social media channels from 9.45am Monday to Friday (and seven days a week during the Christmas school holidays).
