Manager of community and cultural development, Nick Guggisberg said the Disability Consultative Group would guide the work of Kiama council and provide feedback to disability service providers.
“This is an important opportunity for locals with disability, and carers, to comment on their experiences with accessing disability services and how well they meet their needs,” Mr Guggisberg said.
“They will also be able to work with council to look at ways people with disability can be supported to fully participate in community life.
“It will also support service users as they experience the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme which will be rolled out from July 2017.”
Kiama council currently provides a range of disability services such as centre-based social activities and excursions as well as in-home support services, including personal care, in-home respite, domestic assistance and home maintenance.
Mr Guggisberg said the group would help council in its role as a service provider itself, as well as in its responsibilities supporting other service providers.
“A key part of council’s planning is promoting and supporting activities, practices and programs for sustainable health and well-being in the community.
“This includes supporting the growth and development of Kiama’s community groups and service sector.”
Mr Guggisberg said the Disability Consultative Group would also serve as a peer support network.
“Anyone with a disability, including carers, is welcome take part,” he said.
“People can attend as many times as they like.
“However, I would like to encourage regular attendance to help it develop as a support group.”
The first meeting of the group will take place on Wednesday, September 21 at 10.30am, and will be held on the council chambers.
