September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy month. Worldwide, 67 million children have no access to education, and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. Our members support educational projects that provide technology, teacher training, vocational training teams, student meal programs, and low-cost textbooks to communities.
In our local area, Kiama Rotary actively supports the Imagination Library project which improves early childhood literacy for children by giving them a free, high-quality, age-appropriate book each month from birth to age 5.
Our next major fundraising event is the Rotary Festival of Choirs which will be held at the Kiama Pavilion on Sunday, October 9, from 2pm to 5pm. Tickets can be purchased at Kiama Newsagencyor at the door.
KIAMA LIONS
Last week a number of Lions "Grandfathers” cooked for a Father’s Day breakfast at St Peter and Paul School. Four of us cooked 400 eggs and 800 rashers of bacon in an hour and a half and there wasn’t much left at the end.
We hope to be able to report that the Hot Rod Car Show was a success next week, we are certainly prepared. Our Driver Reviver team will be dusting off their cobwebs for the school holiday weekends at the end of this month.
Next month our activity level ramps up with The Blue Haven Fete and the Relay for Life Kitchen - we are already making preparations.
KIAMA CWA
The CWA is Australia’s largest women's organisation. Join us for friendship and fellowship and in helping to improve conditions for country women and children, lobby for change, and become a part of a network dedicated to supporting local communities.
Our next meeting on Tuesday, September 20. We will be celebrating our 78th birthday. A 12.30pm start at the CWA Hall at the rear of 70 Shoalhaven St. Our theme for the day will be the Roaring Twenties, so dress up for this special day. Our special guest speaker is Michelle Hall from the NSW Education Dept. Visitors and new members are welcome.
