With the 2016 Kiama Council Elections looming, women being underrepresented in local government is a concern.
For the first time in many years, Greens councillor Kathy Rice is the only woman among the nine Kiama Council members.
“More women on council would balance the way that local community issues are understood by the council,” Kathy Rice said. “I’ve contributed well in my council term and I have developed a very good understanding of local government. I’m looking forward to building upon my work for urban livability and future agricultural security.

“I understand the challenges faced by families"
- Beth Woodstone, Kiama Greens
Beth Woodstone is confident of her ability to take on the role. “Being a woman and a mother connects you to the community in a special way - I am out and about a lot, taking my kids to the park, to school, medical appointments, shopping and sport,” Beth said. “I understand the challenges faced by families and I hope to be their voice on council.”
Kathy added, “Beth, Jodi and I will be responsive to our whole community and to the council.
“We have a lot to offer and as a strong team we are confident that we can make a difference.”
