In an original concept plan for a Lend Lease development of up to 4800 homes the substation was close to the Illawarra Christian School and proposed state primary and secondary schools.
In a modification – approved by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment – it will now be moved 300 metres east along Calderwood Road.
“The department has also recommended as a condition of consent, that a 10-metre wide buffer of trees and vegetation must be built along the boundary to reduce the view of the substation,” a departmental spokesman said.
The spokesman said modern substations were designed to “co-exist with neighbours, particularly in terms of noise, safety and urban design”.
Endeavour Energy will consult with neighbours when planning the substationthe planned substation.
