The mid-week soaking, which is expected to be at its worst during Wednesday evening, kicks off what will be a soggy three days.
Morning commuters were met with light showers in some areas on Wednesday morning.
However, those showers are expected to increase to rain as the day progresses, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Katarina Kovacevic said.
“By this evening, we’re anticipating that rain might actually tend heavy at times,” Ms Kovacevic said.
Weatherzone is predicting a 90 per cent chance of 40 to 80 millimetres in Wollongong on Wednesday, with the bureau suggesting a “near 100 per cent” chance of rain.
The bureau’s mapping (below) shows widespread falls of between 25 and 50 millimetres are forecast across the South Coast.
No rain-related weather warnings were in place for the region as of 9.45am. A strong wind warning is current for Illawarra coastal waters.
Southerly winds of between 15-25 km/h throughout Wednesday will increase to 20-30 km/h during the evening.
The rain is being driven by a low pressure trough over northeastern NSW, which is expected to deepen into a low pressure system off the central coast later on Wednesday.
The system will bring gusty winds and heavy rainfall, before it moves away into the Tasman Sea on Thursday morning, forecasters say.
