Officially opened on August 18, the Whale Watching Platform is adjacent to the Minnamurra to Kiama walking track and cycle way.
Member for Kiama Gareth Ward said he was pleased to secure $10,000 in funding for the project, which will be a boost to the community.
“When the whales are sighted in this area, people flock to the headland,” he said.
“This funding has allowed for the construction of a platform and a safe environment for locals and tourists alike to view and enjoy the whales.”
Kiama councillor Mark Way was among those involved in the project launch, as well as the Minnamurra Lions Club.
Cr Way said the platform will encourage tourists to visit the area.
“With whale watching being extremely popular, this platform will also be a drawcard for tourism,” he said.
“I have seen whales come right in close at this location – so close in fact you could not only see them [but] hear the noises as they surface. The platform ... allows you safe access overlooking the ocean and foreshore, [which is] almost as good as being on a boat without the worry of sea sickness.”
With whales commonly spotted off the South Coast, Cr Way said the platform was set to be accessed by thousands of people.
