What’s in store for Australia on Day 7
Athletics kicks off its competition program with three sessions on Day 1. Flagbearer Anna Meares starts her program and popular boxer Shelley Watts has her first bout. Three men’s teams, basketball, hockey and water polo, will continue their pool games.

SHOOTING – Women’s Skeet
Rio time: 09:00 (qualification) & 15:00 (finals), AEST: 22:00 (qualification) & Saturday 04:00
Aislin Jones will become the nation’s youngest ever Olympic shooter when she takes to the Rio range. Jones looks to be a star of the future but has proven she can match it with the world’s best already after finishing eighth at the final World Cup event prior to Rio.
SHOOTING – Men’s 50m rifle prone
Rio time: 09:00 (qualification) & 11:00 (finals), AEST: 22:00 (qualification) & 24:00 (finals)
Warren Potent heads into Rio as the world number one and the current world champion in the 50m prone event. Potent won bronze in Beijing and is a strong shot for another Olympic medal in Rio.
ARCHERY – Men’s Individual 1.8 Eliminations Taylor Worth AUS vs A Fernandez ESP
Rio time: 9:52 (1/8 eliminations) & 15:00 (finals), AEST: 22:52 (1/8 eliminations) & Saturday 04:00
Already a bronze medallist in the Teams Event at these Games, Taylor Worth, by making the round of 16, has already equalled his London position, but will be looking to defeat Spain’s Antonio Fernandez in the round of 16 before progressing deep into the competition. We last won an individual men’s medal in 2004.
ROWING – Men’s Four
Rio time: 11:00, AEST: 24:00
The men’s coxless fours will look to step up one place from their London 2012 silver. Joshua Dunkley-Smith and William Lockwood will make their second Games appearance in the boat, while Joshua Booth will also compete in his second Olympics, moving from the men’s eight to the four. The trio will be joined by rookie Alexander Hill. They won silver at the 2015 World Championships and also secured two 2016 World Cup wins.
BASKETBALL – Men’s Australia vs China
Rio time: 14:15, AEST: 16:00
On paper Australia look the stronger of the two sides having opened the tournament with two big wins before pushing the USA all the way on Wednesday. China sit bottom of the group without a win and Australia will have Olympic history on their side with the Aussies winning both the previous clashes at the Games.
ATHLETICS – Men’s 20km Walk
Rio time: 14:30, AEST: Saturday 03:30
While Jared Tallent is well known in Australian and world circles for success in race walking, we can expect to see the emergence of the next big thing is an event that has yield many medals for Australia for more than two decades. Dane Bird-Smith arrives in Rio and is a genuine top-8 prospect, but don’t be surprised if he finishes on the podium.
CYCLING – Track: Women’s Team Sprint
Rio time: 16:00, AEST: Saturday 05:00
The first event at the Games for Australian Opening Ceremony flagbearer Anna Meares is the women's team sprint. Having won bronze in the event in London she now teams up in Rio with new partner, Stephanie Morton.
CYCLING – Track: Men’s Team Pursuit
Rio time: 16:52, AEST: Saturday 05:52
The men’s team pursuit team won gold at the 2016 World Championships and will be one of the favourites for the Rio competition. In the qualifying round in Rio Australia finished third, less than one second behind Great Britain and Denmark. In the first round today, Australia will line up against the Danes to decide which medal race they will contest.
BOXING – Women’s 57-60kg
Rio time: 17:45, AEST: Saturday 06:45
Commonwealth Games champion, Shelley Watts, makes her much anticipated debut in the Olympics, when she takes on Youth Olympic Games silver medallists Irma Testa. For one of the most supportive members of the team, it will be the team’s turn to rally behind Watts. Also competing on Day 7 is Daniel Lewis who, having won his first fight, meets Bektemir Melikuziev from Uzbekistan.
HOCKEY – Men’s Australia vs Brazil
Rio time: 20:30, AEST: 09:30
Australia’s final pool match is against hosts Brazil. Fresh from a last up win against Great Britain, Australia should have little trouble against Brazil and will likely finish third in their pool, ahead of the quarter-finals commencing on Sunday.
WATER POLO – Men’s: Australia vs Serbia
Rio time: 22:10, AEST: 11:10
The men’s water polo tournament is an incredibly close competition. Just two goals have been the difference in Australia’s games and Hungary, who are one point behind Australian in group A have experienced three draws. Australia’s opponent today, Serbia, have themselves had two draws. Australia had a loss in just their one clash in Olympic history.
SWIMMING – Women’s 50m freestyle
Rio time: 22:44, AEST: 11:44
After missing the podium in the 100m, Campbell sisters have a chance to win individual medals in the splash and dash. Bronte is reigning World Champion.
SWIMMING – Women’s 200m backstroke
Rio time: 22:03, AEST: 11:03
Belinda Hocking is Australia’s sole representative and she is a genuine medal chance, rated fourth going into the final. A silver medallist at the 2013 World Championships, she is the reigning Commonwealth champion.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL –Women: AUS Bawden/Clancy vs to be confirmed
Australian pairing of Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy, have cruised into the round of 16, following three wins in their pool. Their draw for the next round will occur after all the pool games are finalised after midnight local time.
